Book Club tonight!

I'm looking forward to seeing you tonight, and sampling all your  many delicious variations on lemon!!

7 pm at my place. dig it.

Oh! I forgot to mention... bring a bottle of wine or some beers if you'd like. I'd almost forgotten the dread wine shortage of November!  :)

BOOKS for the Book Club year!

Thanks for the great meeting Wednesday! I'm soooooooooooo excited to get reading!

But first, a few helpful asides:

If you order used books from Better World Books, you'll probably want to leave yourself a couple of weeks to receive them. Of course, I wholeheartedly encourage you to patronize all our great Montpelier bookstores, which support your bookish neighbors while allowing you to procrastinate. :)

Jess is going to get us copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" from the VT Humanities Council as part of their 2011 Vermont Reads initiative, so we don't have to worry about buying that one.

The books listed are the ones we'll be discussing each month, so you'll want to procure these in time to have them read for the meeting. I know, I'm over-explaining.  :)

We're going to have a food theme for our December meeting- everything has to involve lemon. Oh, the endless possibilities tantalize and delight!

So, without further ado, here are our picks for this Book Club season...!

December 1, 2010:
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker
Potluck: Bring a dish that involves lemon!

January 5, 2011: Annual Book Club Post-Holiday Potluck! Bring a dish that has a story- something your mother or grandmother made, your father's famous french toast, the hot chocolate your sister makes for you! The idea is to share both special foods, and the reasons that they matter to you. We're not reading a book for this meeting since the holidays are soooooooooo busy.

February 2, 2011: Confections of a Closet Master Baker by Gesine Bullock-Prado

March 2, 2011: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

April 6, 2011: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (remember, we can borrow copies of this from the VT Humanities Council!)

May 4, 2011: The Nightingales of Troy by Alice Fulton

June 1, 2011: My Life in France by Julia Child

Happy reading! See you in December!

Book Club Fall Launch!!

Huzzah! It's fall.

I did some thinking/conversing over the summer about how we choose books, and propose this new method:

Everyone finds two books they want to read/discuss with the group, and comes to the meeting prepared with their titles/authors. Then each person writes their votes on two little slips of paper, and we put them all in a hat and draw 6. If your book is picked, you talk a little about why you chose that book (why it would be good to read with a group, or about the subject or author) and then we assign each book to a month, and voila! we have 6 months programmed, just like that. Even though it makes for less discussion choosing the books, I think it might be more fair, and ultimately it might challenge us to read books that we might not have chosen for ourselves, which I think is one of the great perks of being in a book club- exploration, conversation, community.

What do you think? Post your thoughts, if you like.

Our next meeting (pending feedback from the group) is Wednesday, November 3 at 7 pm.

Hope to see you there!
